DID YOU KNOW you can be a part of a Variety Show?  If you are interested in participating in a Variety Show on Saturday, April 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Marion Municipal Building Auditorium, please call Margo Yates at 620-382-3425. the 4th Annual fundraising event for multiple sclerosis is coming up soon?  Mark your calendars for Thursday, March 27 from 6pm - 8pm for the 4th annual Spaghetti Dinner & Hymn Sing-a-long for MS.  A free will offering will be collected with 100% of the proceeds going to the MS Walk in McPherson (which is scheduled for April 19, 2008).  This annual event will be held at Valley United Methodist Church, 300 E Santa Fe in Marion.  The Spaghetti Dinner is sponsored by the Dan & Laura Baldwin family and the Sing-a-long will be lead by Ralph Noriega.  Please plan to attend to support MS research.  For more information about MS you can visit www.nationalmssociety.org.  (Submitted by Ralph Noriega and Laura Baldwin). 
DID YOU KNOW
that the Marion City Council has officially changed their meeting time?  The Marion City Council voted 3-2 to change their meeting time back to 4:00PM.  In May 2006 the meeting times were changed from 4:00pm to 5:30pm.  Effective today, Monday, March 24, 2008, the City Council will start meeting at 4:00pm.  (Submitted by Jami Williams)

that the Shepherd Shed is looking for a new location?  The building they were located in on North Cedar has sold and they are looking for a place to relocate.  The Shepherds Shed is a FREE clothing store that services all of Marion County.  The Shepherds Shed needs to find a location before April 16th.  If you have (or know of) a vacant space that might be suitable for this service, please contact Robin Dicks at 382-2643.  The Shepherds Shed is open on Wednesdays from 2:30pm - 6:00pm both to receive donated items and distribute clothing.  (Submitted by Robin Dicks)

that the Marion City Council election will be April 1?  If you would like to advance vote to get it out of the way, you can pick up advance ballots at the City Clerks office.  You will be allowed to vote for TWO candidates to fill the two open positions.  The candidates listed on the ballot will be:  Katherine DeFilippis; Gerry Henderson; Bill Holdeman and Steve Smith.  Jerry Kline is also running a write in campaign.  (Submitted by Jami Williams)

be having an open discussion regarding the use of the Marion County
Lake Hall? A time for open discussion has been scheduled for TODAY
Monday, March 17 at 1:00pm in the Couny Commission Room to give
constituents a chance to voice their opinions about the proposed use
of the Marion County Lake Hall. The public is encouraged to attend.

Mark A Raleigh? Please plan to join the Welcome Home Ceremony for Sgt
Mark A Raleigh whom recently completed a tour in Iraq on Saturday,
March 22 at 2:00 PM at Marion VFW Post 6958. Staging area will be the
Eastmoor United Methodist Church at 1:30 for signing of the Flag; 1:45
PM Prayer and Briefing. Kick stands up and ready to roll at 1:55 PM.
The Marion County Police and local Highway Patrol will escort them
from the church through downtown Marion to the VFW Post 6958. The
Welcome Home will begin at 2 PM. There will be snacks and drinks

The deadline is March 15. There will be a $25 late fee PER PLAYER
after the March 15, 2008 deadline, so sign up now! They offer BLAST
BALL for preschool boys & girls for $12; baseball and softball for
5-6 year olds for $12; 7-8 year olds for $18; 10 & under for $45; 12
& under baseball for $48 and softball for $46; 13-15 year old
baseball for $60 and softball for $46. It is fun for all ages. If you
have any questions, please call Margo at 382-3425. Forms were sent
home with students, are available at City Hall and on the website.

Marion High School is pleased to announce that their Spring Play will
be this weekend. Plan to attend The Curious Savage a light comedy
written by John Patrick on Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15 at
7:00PM in the new MHS Auditorium. Cost is $2.00 for students and $3.00
for adults. Please join us for the first theatrical performance in the
new auditorium. Advance tickets are available at The County Seat.

Cardie Oil and Service Center is having their GRAND OPENING on
Thursday, March 13 from 11:00am to 1:00pm at 1001 Batt Street. Come

Marion County United Soccer Club registration deadline is Thursday,
March 13, 2008 for the Spring Season (which runs from 3-24-08 through
5/10/08). (If your player registered in the Fall, DO NOT register
again, your player is on the roster and will play this Spring.
Practices will be Monday and Friday for Hillsboro and Wednesday and
Thursday for Marion. Each participant will practice one day a week
and will be notified regarding practice day and time. The games will
be Saturday mornings beginning 3/29/08 and will alternate between
Hillsboro and Marion. Cost is $30 for PeeWee - 2nd Grade and $50 for
3rd Grade - 12th Grade (fee includes t-shirt, club play and
tournament play for the 3rd - 12th grades). Fee must accompany
registration form and can be returned to the Elementary School or
Margo Yates at the Chamber office. For questions, call Margo Yates

Please note that the Marion City Council has changed their meeting
times from 5:30pm to 4:00pm starting at the next council meeting on

DID YOU KNOW that a clean up day has been scheduled for the Marion Reservoir?  Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 12, 2008 for the 6th Annual Marion Reservoir Cleanup Day from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  They need volunteers to clean up trash around Marion Reservoir.  Groups are strongly encouraged to join in the fun as part of a worthwhile community service project.  You will need to dress to get grubby.  Gloves, trash bags and refreshments will be provided.  Meet at the Corps of Engineers Office on the east side of the dam.  This event is sponsored by:  Great Plains Computers & Networking; Marion Reservoir Army Corps of Engineers; Tampa State Bank; Missouri Stream Team #2642 and MudPuppies Nature Club.  Please help improve and restore this valuable resource for both our residents and non-residents, human and animal.  For more information or to sign up, please call 620-382-2006 or 620-382-2101.  (Submitted by Lloyd Davies).

DID YOU KNOW that the City of Marion was approved for the CDBG Grant for Street Improvements? The City of Marion applied
for $400,000 for street improvements on North Cedar and Eisenhower.  The Mayor received a letter last week from Governor
Sebelius saying that we had been approved for the grant, but it did not mention the amount that was approved.  The actual
construction should start in 2009.  A special thanks to everyone who completed the Low to Moderate Income (LMI) survey, the
grant would not have been possible without assistance and support from the community.  (Submitted by Jami Williams) 

 
DID YOU KNOW there will be a Super Bowl Party at the VFW?  ALR Post 22 Marion, KS is planning their 1st Annual Super Bowl
Party Fundraiser for Sunday, February 3rd at 3:00PM.  The American Legion Riders of Post 22 are using the Marion VFW Post
6958 facilities located at 420 W Santa Fe for this fundraiser.  There will be an 8' screen setup to watch the game.  The ALR will have a potato bar with cheese, chili, broccoli and dessert at a price of $5.00.  There will also be nacho & cheese available for a price of $3.00.  The VFW will open the bar area for those wishing to have a drink.  For those individual wishing to come and watch the game only and not buying any food we will ask for a $5.00 donation to help pay for the big screen.  This event is for members and guests.  Non-members can sign in the guest book.  (Submitted by Gary Chaput)
 
DID YOU KNOW that on the 5th of February at 7pm, the American Legion will sponsor a Membership Drive to sign up new
members for the Sons of The American Legion and also for Ladies Auxiliary?  If anyone is interested in joining The Sons of The
American Legion, please contact Todd Carpenter at 620-382-2761.  For those interested in joining the Ladies Auxiliary of the
American Legion, contact Karen Chaput at 620-382-2754.  Please come and support both of these upcoming events.  It is
important that the VFW, American Legion and our community support these events so we can all help and be there for our military

DID YOU KNOW that five candidates applied for the two open City Council positions?  The positions currently held by Jerry Kline and
Bill Holdeman are up for election on April 1.  Candidates are incumbents Kline and Holdeman, Katherine DeFilippis, Steve Smith and
Gerry Henderson.  A primary election will be held on February 26 to narrow the field to four candidates prior to the April 1 election. 
You will be allowed to vote for 2 candidates or fewer on the February 26 ballot.  If you haven't registered to vote, you may do so
before February 11 for the primary.  You will also be able to advance vote or get an absentee ballot from the County Clerk's office.

DID YOU KNOW that PEO is planning a Ground Hog Day Soup Lunch?  Mark your calendars for Friday, February 1, 2008.  The
PEO will be serving soup and "trimmings" from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the Marion City Building Basement.  Cost is $5 for the meal,
plus $1 for Dessert bar.  Soup "to go" will also be available.  Tickets will be available at the door. Proceeds go to fund local
scholarships.

DID YOU KNOW that the Central Park Improvement Committee Auction was Saturday?  The CPIC made just over $3,000 (still
need over $12,000 to finish the project).  Due to an overcommitment of activities on Saturday, there was a rather small turnout
for the auction, so some of the larger items didn't sell.  If you know of anyone who would be interested in a piano, stove (we have
two of them), upright freezer, or hospital bed (we have 4 of these - they would be perfect for the Chingawassa BED races).  Please
call 382-3703 to set up a time to see them - or to place a bid.  Remember all proceeds go to the playground equipment - so this is a

DID YOU KNOW that Leadership Marion County has applications ready for their 2008 class?  The classes go over Leadership, Learning
Styles, Steps to a Performing Community; Wisdom Cycle; Vision; Collaboration; Consensus; Facilitation and Personal Mission.  The 
classes are 1/2 day classes (8am - 1pm) twice a month from March through August - with one full day devoted to a trip to Topeka. 
Lunch is provided for all sessions.  The cost is $175 and hopefully businesses would be willing to sponsor one or two of their employees
This is a great way to get to know people around the county and learn some valuable Leadership information.  For more information,

DID YOU KNOW that the City of Marion has poly carts available for sale?  The City has 95 gallon poly carts with wheels available for
sale for $80.  If you would like to purchase one, please contact the City Office at 382-3703.  We will deliver the poly cart to your home,
and you can use this for trash pick up.  The trash must be bagged inside the poly cart - loose trash will not be picked up.  These poly
